2021 marks the 3rd consecutive year of neutral studies on the Big Data Analytics (BDA) and AI progress of our beloved nation, Malaysia. For the past two years, our annual blueprint showed that telcos, media, banking, and aviation were the top BDA and AI adopters. This is indeed a NATIONAL PRIDE!
However, as data becomes pervasive and is increasingly treated as the new oil, it raises a bunch of ethical issues related to privacy, confidentiality, transparency, and identity. Who owns all that data that we are analysing? Are there limits to the kinds of inferences we can make? What decisions can be made about people (and their private lives) based on these inferences?
Perhaps you’ve pondered over these very important questions yourself.
So, for the first time in Malaysian history, we will reveal the maturity of AI ethics in the country. Along with the standard BDA/AI maturity framework and key recommendations, the AI ethics blueprint will guide the industry in developing and deploying AI-driven systems that are transparent, unbiased, and beneficial to as many people as possible. And this is made possible through our extraordinary collaboration with Dr. Jaspal Kaur and Darmain Segaran from AI Doctrina.
In Europe, under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), EU data protection authorities can impose fines of up to 20 million Euros for personal data breaches. The multiple data violation reports this year alone tell us that we Malaysians should address the elephant in the room and lead by example!
We hope that the revelations in this year’s blueprint will have a lasting impact not only on the data-driven economy but also on the moral compass for the good of humanity.
