CASE STUDY

Ranked 16th globally as a pure-play semiconductor foundry, SilTerra is today one of the Top 5 Malaysian exporters in the Electronics & Electrical (E&E) sector. Its annual earnings of around RM550 million includes exports to customers like Apple, Sony, LG and Broadcom.

SilTerra’s operations has the capacity to ship 40,000 wafers per month, each of which may take
anywhere from 2 to 4 months to fabricate, with up to 30 layers and 100 atoms thick each. This can only be achieved when each of the multi-million dollar tools and equipment is automated, networked and interconnected to report every detail of their operations to an in-house computer integrated manufacturing system – requiring Silterra to be a true digital factory from inception.

This presentation will describe the human side of our experiences in running such a state-of-the-art environment while remaining competitive and leading edge in our business.

12:00PM |Bringing Intelligence to the Edge: Dynamics of Big Data Analytics and AI to Edge Computing in Smart Factories

EDGE COMPUTING

Plants, factories, and manufacturers in general are embracing IoT, which in turn is driving the use of artificial intelligence at the edge of corporate networks as a way to streamline industrial processes, improve efficiency and detect maintenance issues before they become problems – perhaps even big problems that could force plant shutdowns. In a smart manufacturing environment, having devices that are able to process data on its own – instead of persistently relying on cloud computing – is useful when real-time insights are necessary for swift decision making. Edge computing gives the conventional and “dumb” IoT device intelligence to process and analyze the data it collects. The combination of AI especially machine learning and edge computing can filter most of the noise collected by IoT devices and leave the relevant data to be analyzed by edge analytics and decision making for Smart Factory premises. Edge computing will help smart factories in terms of machine connectivity, secure connectivity, real-time historical cloud analytics, device management and firewall.
