Disruptive Software is Eating the Business World

Marc Andreessen’s 2011 proclamation that software is eating the world has come true. But it’s actually open source software that is eating the world. Transforming your business leveraging open source software is the key. However, knowing that alone is not enough. In this presentation, why open source is gaining more and more popularity and how your organisation can evolve with the right open source choice for your projects to transform into a data-driven enterprise will be explained.

Why Big Data Projects Fail: What You Can Do to Ensure Success

The promise of Big Data is huge, yet many projects fail to deliver on expectations. As organisations look to their data to drive revenue, streamline operations and manage risk, the challenge becomes even greater to manage that data and deliver value to the business as quickly as possible.  Hear how organisations are using a data-centric approach to integrate new data sources and deliver projects faster.

IoT-Enabled Care Provisioning for Sustainable Ageing-in-Place: A Singapore Example

In 2014, 12.4% of the population in Singapore were above 65 years of age and this is projected to  increase to 19% by 2030. Among them, those living alone is likely to increase to 83,000 by 2030, up from 35,000 today. The ability to “age in place” –  living where you have lived for years with reasonable quality of life, is especially important for the latter group. While Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled ambient intelligence environments that allow caregivers to remotely monitor a loved one’s activities 24/7 are emerging, most of the above systems are technology-centric, operate in silos and do not tie in with end-to-end care provisioning. Moreover, the elderly community exhibit huge variations in their living patterns and behaviour and a one-size-fits-all system will probably not work for all.

This presentation explores SHINESeniors, an SMU-initiated effort to tackle the above issues through the integration of ambient intelligence with care provisioning, and the personalisation of such systems.

The Complex Path to Energising Cities: How IoT Data Fosters Innovation for
Smart and Sustainable Cities

IOT products and services are blooming, fuelled by better infrastructure provided by smart cities initiatives and an exploding market for connected devices. Creating more local, personal and real-time data doubled with smart grids promises, IOT-ready devices provide excellent opportunities for cities to achieve a better energy management and become more sustainable. But if this goal is to be achieved to its full potential, one needs to embrace a complex situation where all stakeholders (energy providers, distributors, clients, third parties, city government, citizens) have different agendas, sometimes with opposite interests.
